A South Korean court has sentenced former President Park Geun-hye to 24 years in prison after finding her guilty of abuse of power and corruption.
In a nationally televised verdict, the Seoul Central District Court convicted Park of bribery, extortion, abuse of power and other charges. The court's chief judge said it was inevitable that the former president "be held strictly responsible for her crimes, if only to prevent the unfortunate event of a president abusing the power given by the people and causing chaos in state affairs."
Along with the prison sentence, Park was fined more than $16 million. The former South Korean leader has one week to appeal the verdict. Park has steadfastly maintained her innocence, claiming she is a victim of political revenge. Prosecutors had demanded a 30-year prison term.
Park was accused of colluding with longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil to coerce more than a dozen businesses to donate a total of $72 million for the launch of two foundations controlled by Choi. The two women were also convicted of taking bribes from some of those companies.
Park was removed from office early last year following months of massive rallies that saw millions take to the nation's streets calling for her ouster.
She is a daughter of late dictator Park Chung-hee, who ruled South Korea from 1961-1979.
