At least 60 people were also injured in the attack.

Officials said the attack was carried out by three or four militants and two were suicide bombers, according to VOA's Urdu Service. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the raid.

VOA's Urdu service reports that several of the injured are in critical condition at nearby hospitals.

Officials said the miltants entered the mosque via a building next door that is under construction.

Security forces surrounded the mosque after the attack.

Friday's violence comes two weeks after an explosion hit another Shi'ite mosque in Shikarpur in southern Pakistan, killing at least 60 people.

The Associated Press reports that a Taliban spokesman said the attack was retaliation for Pakistan's execution of one of their members.
