Italy Migrants
Italy and France conducted several operations Saturday to rescue more than 1,400 migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya after their smugglers' vessels ran into trouble.
Italian officials said the coast guard and navy rescued 1,200 migrants in several maneuvers, delivering the migrants to various Italian ports.
Meanwhile, a French ship plucked more than 200 migrants and two people suspected of being smugglers from the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya and handed them over to Italian authorities.
About 150,000 migrants reached Italy last year. Rome said recently that 5,000 could reach its shores each week over the next four months - as many as 200,000 by the end of the year.
Since the defunding of a 2014 European Union migrant rescue program, Italy has shouldered most of the burden of rescuing migrants at sea because of its geographical proximity to northern Africa.
