Ebola Burial Team Attacked in Sierre Leone
Officials in Sierra Leone say a group of young people attacked health workers trying to bury bodies of Ebola victims near the capital, Freetown.
The confrontation occurred Saturday, the second day of the government-imposed lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of the virus that has killed more than 2,600 people in West Africa.
The attackers dispersed after police reinforcements arrived to protect the burial team.
Sierra Leone has ordered nearly 6 million of its people to stay at home for three days to enable health workers to identify the infected people and educate others on how to protect themselves.
Ebola has infected more than 5,300 people, most of them in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and it shows no signs of weakening. Nigeria and Senegal also have been affected.
Neighboring Liberia imposed quarantines and curfews last month, but lifted them after street protests.
Critics say such measures make it difficult for people to get food and could prompt those infected to hide themselves instead of seeking help.
The United States has committed $175 million to help combat the outbreak, and is sending 3,000 troops to the region to build field hospitals and provide logistical aid.
