The Republican Party's national convention enters its second day in New York (today/Tuesday) after an opening session dominated by praise for President Bush's leadership following the September 11th (2001) terrorist attacks.

An Iraqi militant group has claimed to have killed 12 Nepalese hostages, who were abducted because of their cooperation with U.S. forces in Iraq.

The Asian Development Bank says it plans to loan $36 million a year to Laos over the next two years. The Manila-based bank says the money will be used for projects promoting economic growth and poverty reduction in the country, primarily in the northern provinces. The bank says projects planned for Laos include improved sanitation and water services in the northern part of the country, developing the Lao agriculture sector and small business development.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has outlined an accelerated timetable for his planned withdrawal of settlers fron Gaza strip.
