No one has claimed responsibility for the blast which occured during lunch hour at a crowded bus station in Vientiane.
The government has not identified suspects or offered an explanation.
Mr. Ly Southavilay, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign affairs confirmed that the explosion was heard as far as 2 kilometers away and injured more than ten people, four of them seriously.
