Leaders of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos Calls for Japanese Investment in Tri-Border Region

VIETNAM-CAMBODIA-LAOS : The prime ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos say they want to develop infrastructure in their tri-border region by attracting more investment from Japanese businesses. Vietnam's Nguyen Tan Dung, Cambodia's Hun Sen and Laos' Bouasone Bouphavanh discussed the creation of a "development triangle" region at a summit today (Tuesday) in the Vietnamese resort of Dalat.

IRAQ: Iraqi security officials say about 30 people have been killed and many others wounded in car bomb blasts and an attack on a bus in Baghdad. Officials said at least 14 people were killed when gunmen attacked a bus of workers in northern Baghdad today (Tuesday). The victims were employees of the Shi'ite Endowment - the government agency that takes care of the country's Shi'ite mosques and shrines.

FIJI COUP: Fiji's military chief says the army has seized power from the government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Commodore Frank Bainimarama announced the takeover at a news conference today (Tuesday) in Suva, confirming the island nation's fourth coup in the past 20 years.

ASIA STORM: Typhoon Durian has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but its fierce winds and pounding rains are still proving deadly along Vietnam's southern coast. Vietnamese officials say at least 26 people have been killed since the storm made landfall this (Tuesday) morning. Four provinces (Binh Thuan, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Long An, Tien Giang) are reporting casualties and missing people.

THAILAND-SOUTH UNREST: Thai police say a bomb hidden in a bag of vegetables has exploded, killing two people and wounding 18 others in the southern province of Yala. Police say two men left the bomb near a busy market in Yala town today (Tuesday). The attack is the latest in a string of near-daily shootings and bombings plaguing Thailand's three southernmost, Muslim-majority provinces - Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.
