Russia-G8: Foreign ministers from the Group of Eight industrialized nations are meeting in Moscow today (Thursday) to discuss the Iranian nuclear standoff and other issues. The foreign ministers are expected to discuss ways to persuade Iran to accept a package of incentives in exchange for a halt to its uranium enrichment program.
Japan-U.S: President Bush meets with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the White House today (Thursday) for talks expected to focus on a possible long-range missile test by North Korea and Iran's nuclear program. Mr. Bush will later honor Mr. Koizumi with a formal state dinner at the White House.
NoKor Food: A senior official with the U.N. World Food Program says his organization is concerned it will not be able to reach millions of North Koreans in need of food assistance. In an interview (Tuesday) with VOA (Korean Service), the agency's Asia regional director, Tony Banbury, said the organization is currently providing food assistance to one-point-two million people in North Korea. At the end of 2005, the W.F.P. was providing food assistance to more than six million people.
East Timor: Thousands of protesters have gathered in East Timor's capital in support of former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, who resigned earlier this week. Supporters of the former prime minister's ruling Fretilin party arrived in Dili today (Thursday) chanting slogans such as "Long Live Unity." On the way to Dili, foreign peacekeepers set up a large operation to make sure protesters were not carrying weapons.
