Laos Today: Laos Aims for Trade Balance by 2010

Laos says it will continue to work hard to boost its foreign trade with the aim to export more and import less, so as to achieve trade balance by the year 2010. Laos is currently experiencing a $200 million trade deficit.

Laos' Commerce Minister Soulivong Dalavong says achieving trade balance is every Laotian's duty. He calls on all sectors of the Lao economy to work hard to expand foreign trade, boost exports and lower imports.

In order to achieve its goal of trade balance, Laos will have to boost exports at an annual rate of no less than 15%, and limit import increases to a rate of no more than 8% a year.
