Laos Today: Future Still Uncertain for Lao Hmongs in Phetchaboun

The future is still uncertain for the more than 6,000 Hmong refugees who have been living in makeshift shelters along the road leading to Ban Houay Nam Khao in Khao Khoh District, Phetchaboun, Thailand.

It is not clear what action Thai authorities will take even though they have repeatedly stress that the Hmongs have illegally entered the country and therefore deserved to be deported back to Laos.

The refugees had been living in Ban Houay Khao Khoh since their arrival there in mid 2003. But last July, they were evicted from the village and since then have been living in makseshift shelters along the road leading to the village.

Vang Xeng, the Hmong leader tells VOA that his people are living in dire conditions due to lack of food and medicine.
