A United Nations official says actions by the Islamic State group against Iraq's Yazidi minority may amount to "an attempted genocide."
Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic said Tuesday after returning from Iraq that there is evidence the militants were killing Yazidis who refused to convert to Islam.
Islamic State fighters have killed hundreds of Yazidis and captured hundreds of women and girls since sweeping into northern Iraq in August. They besieged Mount Sinjar, near the border with Syria, prompting the first U.S. airstrikes in a campaign that has now expanded to a multi-national coalition targeting the militants in Iraq and Syria.
Earlier this week, U.S. cargo planes also airdropped weapons and ammunition meant for Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, but activists say at least one of the shipments has fallen into the hands of Islamic State militants.
Video from a pro-Islamic State media group shows a masked fighter inspecting the hand grenades, ammunition and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday the military is examining the video, and is confident that 27 of 28 airdrops successfully reached Kurdish fighters who are trying to hold off an attempt to seize the town of Kobani.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement Monday that an airstrike destroyed what it called a "stray resupply bundle," but it is not clear if those weapons are the same as those depicted in the video.
