ອັນຕະລາຍຢູ່.

It has been a turbulent few weeks for the independent media in Russia, after authorities in Moscow accused Ivan Golunov - a prominent investigative journalist - of producing and trafficking drugs, using what observers say was dubious evidence. An outcry of a magnitude not seen before by media colleagues and the public led to a decision by the Ministry of the Interior to withdraw the charges and dismiss those in charge of the case. For VOA from Moscow, Olga Pavlova and Ricardo Marquina have this report narrated by Bronwyn Benito.

After five days behind bars, Ivan Golunov, emerged from jail free of the drug trafficking charges that could have put him in prison for 20 years. He was freed thanks to a surprising and unprecedented show of support from civil society, activists, and his media colleagues.

Dmitry Muratov, Chairman, Novaya Gazeta Newspaper (in Russian)

"I think this (shows) outstanding solidarity among the journalist community, a "rebellion " of professionals, not a frivolous protest but a rebellion of true professionals who survived in independent Russian journalism."

Two days after his arrest, Russian independent newspapers published accounts with headlines that read "I am Golunov." Copies were sold out within minutes of hitting the newsstands. Journalists say the charges were fabricated.

Anton Orekh, Journalist, Echo of Moscow Radio Station (male in Russian

"It would be a strange thing for someone to be involved in investigative journalism and drug trafficking at the same time. It is hugely absurd."

Ivan Golunov's release and the firing of the police officials in charge of the investigation did not stop free press advocates from holding a demonstration in central Moscow. The protest, not licensed by authorities, led to the arrest of more than 500 people.

A second demonstration took place, this one authorized by the government. Demonstrators expressed frustration over what they say is the increasingly arbitrary behavior by Russian police.

"I came because I am worried that what happened to him (to Golunov) can happen to anyone, to you, to me."

Golunov's release was an unexpected victory for advocates of press freedom in Russia - a country where independent media has been increasingly squelched. The Golunov case is a reminder that investigating those in power in Russia remains a dangerous business.
