Pope Francis has called on the world's Muslim leaders to condemn terrorism carried out in the name of Islam.

Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane from Istanbul to Rome, the pontiff said doing so would help dispel a wrongful stereotype held by those in the West who equate the two.

"On Islamophobia, it is true that when one sees these terrorist acts, not only in this region, but also in Africa, there is this reaction: 'If this is Islam, I am going to get angry'. And so many Islamic people are offended, many, many say, 'but we are not this because the Koran is a book of peace. It is a prophetic book of peace. That ((terrorism)) is not Islam."

The pope said he conveyed the same message to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a three-day visit.

The pope's message coincides with a months-long drive by Islamic State extremists to seize large swaths of Syria and Iraq where they have expelled or slaughtered Shi'ite Muslims, Christians and others who do not support their radical interpretation of Sunni Islam.
