The United Nations' refugee agency says more than 30,000 Syrian refugees have crossed the border into northern Iraq in less than a week to escape violence in their homeland.

The agency says about 35,000 refugees, believed to be mainly Syrian Kurds, have entered Iraqi Kurdistan since last Thursday, including an estimated 5,100 on Tuesday, well above the limit of 3,000 refugees a day set by the government.

Officials with the U.N. refugee agency said Monday during a meeting in Baghdad that up to 100,000 Syrian refugees could be expected to flee to Iraq within the next month, if the current pace continued.

Fleeing bombardments and sectarian tensions in parts of northern Syria including Aleppo and Efrin, the refugees arrive exhausted, with many children dehydrated from walking in the scorching heat.

The new arrivals join nearly 2 million Syrians who already have found refuge abroad from the country's relentless carnage.
