U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions says any suggestion that he colluded with Russia to meddle in last year's presidential election is an "appalling and detestable lie."
Sessions answered questions for more than two hours in an open session Tuesday with the Senate Intelligence Committee. The panel is investigating Russian interference in the November vote.
He told the committee he would have been "shocked" and quit his role as then-candidate Donald Trump's national security advisor if he had thought there was any collusion between the campaign and Russia.
Sessions said there was nothing improper when he met twice last year with Russia's U.S. Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. He said both meetings were in his capacity as a U.S. senator and not as part of the Trump campaign.
"I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the United States," Sessions testified.
But he said he has no recollections of a third meeting with the ambassador when they both attended a Trump foreign policy speech at a Washington hotel.
Sessions withheld reporting those meetings during his confirmation hearings for attorney general.
He has reused himself from the investigations into Russian election interference, saying federal law requires him to do so because he was a key campaign adviser to Trump.
Because he has recused himself, Sessions says he has "no knowledge" of the probe headed by special counsel Robert Mueller.
But in his appearance before the panel last week, fired FBI Director James Comey said there is information that makes it "problematic" for Sessions to be part of the investigation. Sessions firmly denied there are any problems.
"There are none. I can tell you that with absolute certainty. This is secret innuendo being leaked about me and I don't appreciate it."
Sessions said his recommendation that Trump fire Comey was because of reported turmoil inside the FBI and not because of what Trump has called the "made up story" about Russia.
