Philippine government officials say at least 22 detainees at a Manila prison were killed today (Tuesday) after security forces raided the facility to regain control from a group of suspected Muslim militants. Among those killed in the raid were at least three leaders of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf Muslim militant group.

Syrian intelligence agents in the Lebanese capital are reported preparing to leave -- a day after a massive rally in Beirut, demanding an end to Syria's military presence in the country.

Israeli officials say the army will hand over security control of the West Bank city of Jericho to the Palestinians on Wednesday. News of the transfer date came late Monday, after the latest round of talks between Israeli and Palestinian security chiefs.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives in India today (Tuesday) at the start of her first diplomatic mission to Asia. Her discussions are expected to focus on Indian relations with Pakistan and other regional issues. After New Delhi, Ms. Rice will head to Pakistan and Afghanistan before traveling to Japan, South Korea and China.

Thousands of chickens in North Korea are reported to have died from bird flu. Citing a source familiar with North Korea, South Korea's Yonhap news agency says the outbreak happened last month at a chicken farm in Pyongyang. The virus has killed least 33 Vietnamese, 12 Thais and one Cambodian.
