Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud has renamed pro-Syrian Omar Karami as prime minister, just two weeks after he resigned the post following massive opposition protests against Syrian influence in Lebanese politics.

Iraqi authorities say insurgents have shot dead at least three policemen, including the chief of a central Baghdad police station. Police say the gunmen fired on a vehicle in which police officers were traveling to work this (Thursday) morning.

Prosecutors in Thailand have accused eight Islamic teachers of masterminding separatist violence in which nearly 600 people have died in the south of the country. The accused men appeared before the Bangkok Criminal Court today (Thursday).

The European Union says it wants closer security cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to help strengthen the regional grouping and enable it to tackle terrorism.

The Israeli military says soldiers have shot and killed an armed Palestinian militant during a raid near the West Bank town of Janin. The soldiers also demolished the home of the militant who was a member of the radical Islamic Jihad group and linked to last month's suicide bombing in Tel Aviv that killed five Israelis.
