Section of Mekong Between Laos and Thailand Unnavigable for Heavy Cargo Ships - 2005-03-09


Thai authorities say cargo ships over 100 tons have not been able to operate on the Mekong between Chieng Khan in Thailand’s Loei province and Laos’ Luang Prabang since mid-February because this perticular portion of the Mekong has severely dried up, a result Thai environmentalists say of dams in southern China and the ADB’s policy of supporting hydropower projects in the GMS region, which help to create draughts due to deforestation.
