Following the attempt by two suspected North Korean asylum seekers to scale its wall yesterday, the American embassy in Vientiane issues a statement reiterating the U.S government’s concern for the welfare of the North Korean people based on humanitarian grounds. The statement did not mention the attempt to enter its compound by the suspected North Koreans, saying only that the Embassy does not comment on such cases.
One of the men managed to get into the embassy, while the other was stopped by police and embassy security guards.
In the past couple of years, North Korean asylum seekers have transited through Laos. But this is believed to be the first attempt by North Koreans to seek asylum in Laos.
