Iraqi officials say unidentified gunmen have shot and killed the deputy police chief of Baghdad. Officials say the assailants killed Brigadier Amer Nayef and his son this morning in Baghdad's southern Dora district after the two men left their home. Separately, a suicide car bomb exploded at a police station in southern Baghdad, killing at least three people and injuring several others.
Mahmoud Abbas has declared victory in the Palestinian presidential elections, although official results are not expected until later today. Mr. Abbas announced victory after exit polls gave him an overwhelming lead over his six competitors. The Palestine Liberation Organization chief dedicated the win to his predecessor, the late Yasser Arafat.
A Vietnamese hospital official says a 16-year old girl has died of bird flu, becoming the third person killed by the virus in the past two weeks. Doctors at the Hospital of Tropical Disease in Ho Chi Minh city battled for three weeks to save the teenager's life, but said she died Friday.
