Iraqi authorities say 50 suspected insurgents have been detained in connection with Sunday's suicide car bombings in the nation's two holiest Shi'ite cities, Najaf and Karbala. Hospital officials say the death toll from the carnage has risen to 66--at least 52 lives lost in Najaf and 14 in Karbala. More than 140 people were wounded by the explosions.

Chinese President Hu Jintao has praised Macau's economic growth and social stability since it returned to Chinese control five years ago. President Hu is in the tiny, former Portuguese enclave for anniversary celebrations and Monday's inauguration of Edmund Ho for a second term as Macau's chief executive.

North Korea has threatened to strengthen its self-defense force if the United States continues policies that Pyongyang say are intended to topple its government. A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman today condemmend a recent U.S. human rights law on North Korea as an attempt to bring down the Stalinist regime.
