Mekong Riparian Nations Met in Laos - 2004-12-15

Laos recently hosted a series of meetings of the Mekong riparian nations. One, the 11th ministerial-level conference of the International Mekong River Committee (MRC) was held early this month in Vientiane, during which the four member-nations - Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand - agreed to cooperate in protecting the environments of all the Mekong tributaries from developmental impacts.

Environmentalists say the most damaging impacts on the environments of the Mekong river and its tributaries are development projects in China.

And on Tuesday, December 14, officials from the six member-nations of the Greater Mekong Sub-region met in Vientiane to discuss their economic cooperation program.
