Ukraine's Supreme court is expected to issue a ruling today in the election dispute that has left the former Soviet republic bitterly divided, and its capital paralyzed by massive demonstrations. The court has ben meeting on the election case all week, and the judges' deliberations are now said to be in their final hours.

Thousands of protesters and victims have gathered in the Indian city of Bhopal to mark the 20th anniversary of the world's worst industrial accident. On December 3, 1984, 40 tons of poisonous gas leaked from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. The Indian government says about 15 thousand people have died as a result of the accident.

International leaders are backing U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in the wake of calls for him to resign over the U.N. Iraq oil-for-food corruption scandal. French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told reporters Thursday they have called Mr. Annan to offer their support.
