Leaders of the four poorest members of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) have agreed to forge closer links to catch up with their wealthier neighbors. The leaders of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Burma signed an agreement in Vientiane today to link their economies and attract foreign investment. This comes ahead of an ASEAN summit that begins Monday.

Philippine troops have killed a senior commander from the al-Qaida -linked Abu Sayyaf group in a clash on the southern island of Basilan. Munap Maniyalah, also known as commander Munap, was shot late Saturday in a raid on his hideout in the Basilan capital of Isabela.

Representatives of Ukraine's two presidential candidates have resumed negotiations aimed at resolving a dispute over last Sunday's disputed run-off elections. The working group conferred briefly in Kiev on Saturday.
