U.S. and Iraqi forces are still battling insurgents in Fallujah today(Sunday), although senior officials say the offensive against the rebel-held city is nearly complete.Insurgents are still putting up strong resistance in a southern section of the city, while coalition forces control the rest of Fallujah.

Palestinian officials say they will hold an election by Jan.9 to choose a new president to replace Yasser Arafat. By Palestinian law, an election for a new president must take place within 60days of Mr. Arafat's death, but several questions about the election remain, including how freely Israeli forces will allow Palestinians to travel in the occupied territories.

The World Health Organization says public-health officials and governments worldwide should be preparing for a possible global influenza outbreak-- a health emergency that could kill millions of people.
