President Bush is expected to name National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as his new secretary of state today (Tuesday). A senior Bush aide says Mr. Bush will nominate Ms Rice to replace Secretary of State Colin Powell, whose resignation was announced Moday. Her nomination will require Senate approval.

U.S. military officials in Iraq say American and Iraqi forces have launched operations against insurgents in the northern city of Mosul. A spokewoman told reporters in Iraq's third largest city that forces are moving in today to secure police stations hit hard by insurgents in recent days.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has changed his mind and will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Chile that begins Saturday. Aides say he will leave for Santiago on Thursday. Mr. Thaksin had canceled his trip following last month's deaths of Muslim protesters in Thai custody.
