Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, praised by some as the greatest champion ao the Palestinian cause but reviled by others as terrorist, died at a French military hospital today. He as 75. Hospital officials said the veteran leader died after being cmaose for a week.

Reacting to Yasser Arafat's death, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the event may be a "turning point" in the Middle East. Mr. Sharon said Israel would "continue its efforts to reach a political settlement with the Palestinian, without delay."

U.S. forces have resumed shelling targets in the Iraqi city of Fallujah.U.S military officials say the attacks are directed at what they called "pockets of resistance" by insurgents in northern parts of the city. U.S. and Iraqi troops have taken control of most of Fallujah, a former insurgent stronghold west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Military officials say insurgents can no longer coordinate attacks.
