Authorities in Iraq say a car-bomb explosion in central Baghdad today has killed three civilians and wounded at least eight other people, including two Australian soldiers. Police say an explosives-laden car parked a few hundred meters from the Australian embassy was detonated by remote control as a military convoy passed.

A court in Laos has handed down prison sentences to 16 members of a rebel gang involved in an armed raid at a border checkpoint more than four years ago.Reports say eight of the gang members received 12-year terms; eight others received lesser sentences, ranging from two to seven years. All of the defendants reportedly admitted their guilt before the Champassak People's court in southern Laos.

Another powerful earthquake has struck Japan's northwestern Niigata Prefecture, site of a quake Saturday that was the nation's most deadly in nine years. Today's temblor measured 5.6 on the Richter scale and could be felt in Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of deaths or damage.
