Iraqi police say the bodies of 49 soldiers from Iraq's new army have been found shot dead on a road northeast of Baghdad. Authorities said today unknown insurgents apparently ambushed the soldiers in minbuses as they were returning to their homes in southern Iraq, after a training course at a camp near the Iranian border.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has again urged North Korea to work within the framework of multinational talks to negotiate an end to its nuclear program, and set aside concerns about so-called U.S. hostility against Pyongyang.

Japan is reeling from aftershocks after Saturday's strong earquake that left at least 21 people dead and injured as many as 1800 others. Japanese authorities in northwestern Niigata prefecture say at least 240 aftershocks have been recorded so far, terrifying residents, many of whom lost their homes and have been forced to camp out overnight in cold temperatures.
