American forces have been battling with insurgents today in Iraq's troubled city of Fallujah. U.S. warplanes pounded suspected militant positions, while armored American vehicles were involved in clashes on the eastern edge of Fallujah. There are reports of artillery and gunfire in other parts of the city.

Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri will not attend this week's inauguration of her successor, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The deputy secratary general of Ms. Megawati's Indonesian Democracy Party of Struggle said today that no regulation requires an outgoing president to attend her successor's swearing-in ceremony.

Former Chinese communist party leader Zhao Ziyang turned 85 today, in poor health and under house arrest since 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. The U.S. based Human Rights in China says an online petition has been created calling on the Chinese government to release him.
