More fierce fighting was reported today(Monday) in the Iraqi city of Najaf between U.S forces and militiamen loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The two sides have been fighting near the Imam Ali mosque, which remains under the control of the Shi'ite militiamen. Talks about turning over the shrine to other Shi'ite religious leaders are said to be still at an impasse.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is due to arrive in Pakistan today for talks with senior officials on economic cooperation and joint anti-terrorism efforts. Officials in Islamabad say Mr. Karzai will meet with President Pervez Musharaf, Prime minister Chaudhry Shujat and other officials.

Thai police have defused a large bomb in the capital of the southern province of Yala, where three bombings Saturday injured 11 people. Officials say the bomb was hidden in the fuel tank of a motorcycle parked near a hotel in Yala town.
