An Iraqi cabinet minister says the government wants radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to publicly announce that he will disband his militia and pledge not to resort to violence. Minister of State Kasim Daoud outlined government demands at news conference in Najaf today (Thursday).

Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer says North Korea remains "pretty negative" about a proposal offered by the United States in June to resolve the standoff over its nuclear ambitions.

Malaysia's agricultural officials confirm that a deadly strain of bird flu virus has infected poultry in the country. The announcement today(Thursday) came 24 hours after it was revealed that bird flu had been found in chickens in a northern Malaysian village.
