Police and security officials in New York, Washington and other parts of the United States have increased anti-terrorist precautions, based on a government warning that members of the al-Qaida network have been preparing to attack this country's key financial institutions with car bombs or truck bombs.

Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim cleric has condemned Sunday's deadly car bombs attacks targeting several Christian churches. Grand Ayatollah Ali-al-Sistani today issued a statement that calls the bombings" criminal," and says the right of Iraqi Christians and other religious minorities to live in the country in peace and security must be respected.

North Korea's official media says torrential rain in July flooded or washed away 100,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed the homes of more than 1,000 families.
