Dr. Vang Pobzeb, President of Lao Human Rights Council Inc. of Au Clair, Wisconsin, on Monday addressed the 22nd Session of the U.N. Conference on Indigenous Peoples in Geneva, Switzerland, calling attention to the plights of the Hmong minorities in Laos and urging the U.N. to help stop what he calls the genocide against Hmong people in Laos.
Talking to VOA on the phone from Geneva, Dr. Vang Pobzeb said he also discussed with U.N. refugees and human rights officials the issue of the 16 Vangtao raid suspects who were extradited in early July to Laos by Thai authorities and asked the U.N. to ensure that they receive fair trial and treatment in Laos.
He also called on Thai authorities not to repatriate Hmong refugees who live outside of Wat Thamkrabok and are not eligible for resettlement in the U.S., while his organization works on the U.S. and U.N. to resettle those refugees in third countries.
