Shells exploded near Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's residence and the headquarters of his political party. mortar rounds also fell in the heavily fortified so-called green zone, where the U.S and British embassies are located.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has signed a new law that grants the interim government wider powers to combat insurgents and foreign Muslim militants.

Sri Lankan police say suspected Tamil Tiger rebel detonated explosives inside a police station in the capital, Colombo, killing herself and at least four police officers.

Thailand has extradited 16 people involved in a raid on a checkpoint in Laos in four years ago, despite a Thai court ruling saying they should not be handed over. Thailand's foreign ministry confirmed the men were handed over to Lao authorities Sunday.
