Laos Assumes ASEAN Chairmanship - 2004-06-30

Laos has assumed chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations from Indonesia. In this capacity, it will act as ASEAN’s coordinator for one year.

Its biggest responsibility will be hosting the annual summit in late November. Laos Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Somsavad Lengsavat says his country is ready to take on the responsibilities or it would not have joined the Association.

The ASEAN chairmanship rotates annually on alphabetical order. Besides Indonesia and Laos, ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar. Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
