Americans are paying their final respects to former President Ronald Reagan, as he lies in state in the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. Thousands of people began filing silently past Mr. Reagan's casket in the Capitol Rotunda late Wednesday in an emotional outpouring of affection and respect for the 40th president.

Leaders from the Group of Eight industrialized nations wrap up their annual summit today (Thursday) in the U-S state of Georgia. Famine, AIDS, and peacekeeping in Africa are expected top the agenda in talks between the G-8 heads of state and several African leaders who were invited to this year's summit.

A senior Pakistani army officer escaped an assassination attempt today (Thursday), when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his convoy in the southern city of Karachi. At least 10 people, mostly soldiers, were killed when assailants fired from buildings on both sides of a street as the convoy was passing through a busy section of the city. Authorities say the attackers then set off an explosion in the area before escaping.
