President Bush, in Europe honoring Allied sacrifices during World War Two, appealed today to a new generation of Europeans and Americans to pull together to help Iraq return to democracy. In Rome, where he met with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the president called the war against terror "the challenge of our time." Mr. Berlusconi and Mr. Bush urged quick passage of a United Nations resolution to rebuild war-torn Iraq.

U-S Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has warned Asian nations that the global war against terrorism is just beginning, and close cooperation is needed to prevent future attacks. Speaking in Singapore to officials from 20 countries attending an Asian security conference, Mr. Rumsfeld urged countries in the region to confront terrorists, not appease them.

North and South Korea have agreed to open two roads and make test runs on two railways across their border in October. Today's announcement, following four days of economic talks in the North Korean capital, says the two sides agreed on a joint management team, headed by a South Korean, at an industrial park nearing completion in North Korea's Kaesong city.
