Palestinian witnesses say at least 13 people have been killed and more than 30 wounded during a major Israeli military operation in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Israeli helicopters launched missile strikes, as soldiers backed by armored vehicles carried out house-to-house searches.

The top U-S civilian administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, attends a memorial service for the slain head of the Iraqi Governing Council and pledges his killing will not derail the transfer of power.

The U-N special envoy to Burma says China, India and ASEAN should encourage Burma's military government to release Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. The Malaysian diplomat's comments come as Burma's government holds a constitutional convention without the country's main pro-democracy leaders.

Laos has returned the remains of dozens of Vietnamese soldiers killed during the Vietnam War back to Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities received the remains of at least 41 soldiers in central Vietnam. The remains were then buried at a military cemetery.
