Children of Lao Expatriates May Become Citizens According to New Law - 2004-05-14

Laos National Assembly, on May 12, approved the amended nationality law which, among other things, allows the children of Lao expatriates to become Lao nationals, provided one of their parents is a Lao citizen. Lao refugees who have kept in touch for seven years with the Lao embassy in the country they live in may also request their Lao nationality back.

Foreigners and persons of no nationality who have lived in Laos for 10 years may also apply for Lao citizenship if they renounce their own nationality.

The move to amend the nationality law is aimed at providing the opportunity for the Lao diaspora to return to Laos and participate in national development.
