The Thai cabinet has approved a measure to provide legal status to illegal workers from Laos, in a move to implement an agreement reached with the Lao government. Some 300,000 illegal workers from Laos will be affected.
To take advantage of this move, Lao workers have to register with the Thai Labor ministry between June 15 - July 15 and provide complete information regarding the family they are living with in order to receive an electronic ID card. Registered workers will be allowed to work in Thailand in approved professions for four years and allowed to come back after a three-year return to Laos.
