Drug trafficking in northern Laos, namely in the Bokeo and Luangnamtha areas, is still active and widespread with the traffickers using more sophisticated tools and weapons, according to a recent report in a Lao magazine.
The report says authorities recently arrested nine suspected drug traffickers from a gang operating in that area, seizing more than seven kilograms of heroin and over 740,000 amphetamines.
The report also says in 2003, authorities arrested 146 traffickers, including 7 Thai nationals and 6 Burmeses, and seized over one million amphetamines.
