Officials at the U-S-led coalition in Iraq and local leaders in the city of Fallujah are calling on insurgents to hand over their heavy weapons in return for a promise of no further offensive action by U-S Marines.

The United States is reported to be planning to lift economic sanctions on Libya soon-- possibly this week. News reports quote unidentified U-S officials and diplomatic sources as saying an announcement could come as early as Thursday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is reported to have met with China's defense chief in Beijing. While there still no official confirmation of Mr. Kim's visit, sources in the Chinese capital say he told the head of China's military, former president Jiang Zemin, that North Korea is willing to give up its nuclear arms program if the United States change its hostile attitude and offer compensation in advance.
