Taiwan's president is released from the hospital, hours after surviving an apparent assassination attempt during a political campaign appearance.

Vice President Annette Lu, who was riding in the same car, was also hurt from a single bullet -- President Chen in the stomach and Ms. Lu in the right knee.

Pakistani officials say fierce fighting continues between government forces and heavily armed gunmen in a remote tribal region, where a top al-Qaida may be cornered. The man is believed to be Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden's lieutenent.

Thai authorities say late Thursday's attacks struck 30 police booths and rural health clinics in the Muslim-majority provinces of Pattani and Songkla in southern Thailand.
