Misunderstanding, lack of knowledge, and refusal by men to use condoms are among factors that put Lao women at unacceptably high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS.
It is reported that 37% of known HIV-infected patients are female. Laos has recorded 1,102 known cases of HIV positive. Of that, 599 cases are full-blown AIDS cases, and 461 have died.
