Vang Pao Ready to Support NTR for Laos if Human Rights Improve - 2003-12-02

Hmong leader, Gen. Vang Pao of the former Royal Lao Army, says he would support normalized U.S trade relations with Laos if the communist government substantially improves its human rights practices and meet other conditions.

The general, who led CIA-backed soldiers from the hill tribe during the Vietnam war, also called for a cease-fire with his former adversaries in Laos and Vietnam, 28 years after the communists took over.

His conditional support for better U.S-Lao relations and his desire to reconcile with old enemies marked a significant shift for the 73 year-old former general, who is now residing in the U.S.

U.S Rep. Betty McCollum, who introduced a bill to nomalize trade relations with Laosnin September, said she welcomed Gen. Vang Pao's call for an end to "the era of killing" in Laos and to start working toward peace.
