Alleged Laotian Rebel Leader Shot Dead in Thailand - 2003-11-03

A Laotian accused of helping lead a cross-border raid on a Lao customs post three years ago has been gunned down in eastern Thailand. Thai police say Sisouk Chaisaeng was shot to death outside his home in Ubon province on Monday, 11/03/03 and suspect the murder may have been prompted by his activities against the Lao government or a disagreement over an arms deal. Mr. Sisouk escaped while 28 members of the raiding group were arrested in July 2000. A Thai court convicted and sentenced the group to prison in March, 2002 and the Thai government has refused to extradite the Lao nationals, saying the raid was a political act.
