Laos Plans to Eradicate Poverty in 47 Poorest Districts - 2003-09-10

The Lao government indicates in a new national poverty eradication program submitted to the just concluded Donors' Conference that it is committed to lift those 47 districts out of poverty by 2005 and plans to spend 40 billion kip toward that goal in the fiscal year 2003/04.

The 40 billion kip is part of the 100 billion kip allocated by the government to poverty reduction. In addition to government funding, the international community also confirmed its continuing assistance to Laos. Foreign assistance will reportedly be increased from 1,650 billion kip to 1,820 billion for 2003/04.

The two-day round table conference, from September 4-5, was attended by 36 bilateral donors, 35 multilateral agencies, and 25 international NGO's.
