A Laos official said that pressures from overseas Lao groups--in particular, protests from Lao-Americans, the U.S. Congress and environmentalists--may affect the funding of Nam Theun 2 Electricity Consortium's hydro-electric project in central Laos.
Four electricity-generating turbines may be set up, becoming the heart of a massive hydroelectric dam, on the Nam Theun River, a tributary of the Mekong.
