Laos: Former President Dies

Mr. Nouhak Phoumsavanh, one of the founders of Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), which took over the county in 1975, has died at age 98, on September 9, 2008.

As the only leading member of the Lao revolutionary movement against French Colonial rulers in 1940s who lived the longest, Mr. Nouhak had attended all eight congresses of the Party since it was held in 1955.

As a member of the politburo of the current single Laos’ party, he took many important positions in both the party and Lao government administration.

His last rank, which lasted from 1992 to 1998, was the president of Lao PDR.
